Group Health Insurance Eligibility

• Group plans or employer sponsored health insurance  is generally available to any full-time employee (employees).  The employer must offer health coverage to all full time employees (defined as anyone working 30 or more hours per week).

• Group Policies can be offered to part time employees (defined as anyone working 20 to 29 hours per week), if your employer is generous. If one part time employee is offered coverage under a group plan, all part-time employees are eligible for coverage.

• No employee can be denied coverage due to pre-existing conditions (any past or current medical condition). Previous medical problems resulting in denial of  coverage are generally only found when seeking an individual health insurance or family health insurance plan.

• In addition, any dependents of eligible employees are also generally eligible for coverage under a group plan. Dependents include spouses, children, and in some cases, unmarried domestic partners. Dependents cannot enroll for coverage unless the employee has enrolled.

As an Employer, What Do I Pay?

Generally insurers and health plans require employers to cover at least half of the premium cost for covered employees. This requirement is meant to persuade more employees to join the health care plan, and prevent what’s known as “adverse selection” where only those prone or susceptible to sickness are motivated to sign up, creating a much higher-risk group for the insurer. Some employers choose to pay all of the annual premiums; others require employees to pay a portion (up to 50 %).

Parents: Remember! Employers are not obligated to pay your dependents premiums. In short, employers may or may not contribute towards premiums for dependents, and can require employees to pay the full 100 percent premium cost for covered dependents.
