Just this week, Aetna has announced that it will be offering influenza vaccinations (flu shots) to all members enrolled in its health benefit plans. This is the fifth consecutive year that Aetna has partnered with Maxim Health Systems to offer these vaccinations to their health insurance plan members. The flu shots will be given from October 1 through mid-November 2008.
If you are a member of an Aetna health insurance plan, you may get your flu shot from one of the following locations:
- Through your physician
- At one of Maxim’s 25,000 sites in retail facilities and corporations. To find a Maxim clinic near you, please visit www.findaflushot.com. You may also call toll-free at 1-866-466-2976 to locate a flu shot clinic or obtain information about the flu shots. They will not provide flu shots to children under 9 years of age.
- SUPERVALU Pharmacies – Members should call 1-800-783-0458 to arrange an appointment. Age limitations vary by location.
- VaxCare – Available to select employer sites in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. See www.vaxcare.com for additional information. They will not provide flu shots for children under 9 years of age.
- Aetna Walk-in Clinics – To find a clinic near you, you must log into Aetna Navigator. Click on “Find Health Care” in “DocFind.” Then select “Facilities” under the “Provider” category and “Walk-In Clinics” under “Provider Type.”
Flu shots and vaccinations are important for everyone, but there are a few groups that are at particularly high risk for the illness and are encouraged to get vaccinated. These groups include:
- Children age 6 months to 18 years
- Anyone age 50 or older
- Pregnant women
- Adults with weak immune systems
- Anyone with a chronic condition, such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, anemia, diabetes, heart disease, liver disease, lung disease
- Anyone with muscle or nerve disorders that may lead to breathing or swallowing problems
- Anyone who lives with or cares for someone at high risk for influenza-related complications
To receive your flu shot, Aetna health insurance members must bring their Aetna ID card with them to their chosen clinic. Most Aetna plans provide full coverage for flu vaccines, but members should consult their individual health insurance plan documents for verification.
Again: Aetna members must bring their Aetna ID card with them. Members who do not present their Aetna ID card will be required to pay for the service at the time the flu shot is given.
